The Founder Fight Begins PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mary Anne
Not finding the answers I needed, I began to do research on what causes founder and how to prevent laminitis....

November 29th-

It was an uneasy day.  I divided my time between checking on Raceman, and doing research over the Internet. I went on  horse boards and posted my plight and asked for opinions. I found the opinions expressed about founder were varied; some as strong as a cup of expresso and others just absurd. There were judgements passed, verdicts rendered, and along the way bits and pieces of useful information emerged. I started taking notes about Devil’s Claw, Arnica, Trameal, Magnesium, DSM, heartbars, foam pads, water baths, and the list went on and on.

In between checking on Racer I was calling my horse friends, picking their brains trying to come up with solutions to this founder problem and really getting nowhere. I left three emergency calls to my farrier and unlike him, he never called back- (I found out later he had left for the holidays) I read about the Strasser Method, apple cider vinegar soaks, mineral rubs and by the end of the day my mind was numb, and although Racer was moving on his own throughout the pasture, his movements were wooden and mechanical. Or he simply stood in that founder stance, in one spot letting the rain beat down on him and not moving a muscle. I was supremely worried. We did creek time that day. Three times- 10 minutes each time. The water swirling higher as it had really rained the night before. (God had been hosing down Racer’s legs for me).  I gave my horse to God and asked Him to please help me make wise choices and not foolish ones. I asked God to keep Racer in my life- keep him fighting, don’t let him give up. I asked for hope, and faith and guidance~
