The combination of the colic, the pain of the founder and the inablity for Racer to be able to walk, finally overwhelmed my guy, and he went down-
December 6th-
This morning Racer was lying in his stall and not moving. Even when I dumped grain into Trav’s pan, Racer never twitched. I buted him while he lay there. Then I sat near him and just talked quietly to him. I don't know what I said, I even sang to him. The air was still and the only sound besides my voice was Trav in the next stall munching hay. Finally, Racer lifted his head and met my eyes, and slowly and painfully got to his feet. We walked to the creek very slowly. When he got in, I could see the tremors in his legs, and he was rocking back and forth like he had done the first day when he was so bad, that typical and scary founder stance. He almost went down in the creek twice. I urged him out and ran in to call the vet. Dr. Mike said to bute him again, and watch him closely…….sigh……..
I buted him more, and gave him another bran mash in case his stomach started to ache again. The bedding should arrive today- that will help. I left him confined to his stall and went in the house for a good cry. I know that I can't fall apart on him when he is next to me, but my heart aches to see this wonderful boy in so much pain and be powerless to lead him out of it. |
