As Racer again continued to get stronger, I found my apprehension was lessening. I was able to sleep through the night, instead of going out every three or four hours to see if founder and finally claimed a victim...

Feb 10, 2004

Another hopeful day in the founder department. Racer seems to have perhaps turned the corner with this. I find that I am hesitant to call the vet and tell him this positive news, as I don’t want to jinx what is happening. But Racer's stride is strong, and his ears are up when he is moving about the pasture. The founder stance is gone, the legs are bearing equal weight, and in the morning when I pick his feet, he no longer leans on my hip for support. (Thank You God for that small favor!) I am sporting two huge bruises on my hips, where this weary horse has been resting his weight on me.

My hope is to build a fence before the Springtime to give me more protection against him getting out into the grass on his own. Once the ground dries up, the electric fence holds little charge for a determined horse. With all the apple trees in the yard, and the lush grass, he knocked the fences down last year so many times. When I found him out in the backyard, I just put him and Trav back in the pasture, repaired the fences and never thought about the consequences of their actions. Perhaps, this is the consequence of all those break-outs?
