Having had to fight founder and WLD early on- I did a lot of research about how to combat these nasties...
White Line Disease
If you ever have to deal with this, there is only one product I would recommend. You can get it at your local health food store and it is Grapefruit Seed Extract. You want the liquid and you pour the liquid into a small jar with a tight fitting lid. Clean the hoof as best you can. I used to dunk Trav's leg in a bucket of warm water, then carefully dry off the foot and apply the GSE by a toothbrush to the affected area. I would then use a small paint brush to paint the hoof, and the coronary band. I did this three times a day.

Hoof Abcesses
Make a mixture of bran and epsom salts (equal parts) Add gylcerine until it forms a crumbly mixture. Cut the corner off a cloth feed sack and place the poultice in the sack. Put the hoof in the bag on top of the mixture and secure the ends around the leg with strapping tape. Cut a section of inner tube and place this around the foot, leaving a length below the hoof. Fold the extra piece up and pour in warm water. Tape the extra piece below the hoof to the piece around the leg and secure with vet wrap. Stall the horse and leave the leg in the mixture at least 24 hours.

Foundered Out
When Racer foundered, and I was told he would start blowing abscesses, I decided to soak his foot in as hot of water as he could stand and epsom salts three times a day. This was done before he blew any abscesses. The result was the abscesses coming out from the bottom of his hoof and not from the sides, plus he didn't have very many that he blew.

Fungus Amongus
If you notice fungus on your horse's leg- you can do one of the following...
Apply a few drops of Athletic Foot Cream
Farnum BLue Lotion, if you dab it on will work
Mix equal parts baby oil with iodine apply for a few day, then gently rub off scabs
Bathe the leg with betadine solution allow to sit on the skin for 10-15 minutes. Rinse than let dry.

Stocked up?
Stocked up legs and tendons, rub the amber colored Listernine on the legs in the direction of the hair, than wrap the legs to sweat them. Unwrap and cool out the horse

If your horse is rubbing its tail and you know you have recently wormed, then rub some listerine on the tailhead-
Mix one tablespoon Captan with a gallon of water. Captan is a rose fungus dust available at any nursery. Spray on affected area, let dry. Do this once a day for a week.

Old Fly Masks
They never last to long in our household. But they also make great wound covers and keep the flies off the leg while still allowing the air to circulate to heal the wound. Just cut to fit and then tape it over the injury. Take care not to bind the leg to tightly with the tape. |
