Foundered Again PDF Print E-mail

Here we go again.... Racer passed his three year anniversary of foundering in November and I passed a large sigh of relief. My relief was short-lived, because in July 2005- founder has once again reared its ugly head.

Two days ago I noticed that Racer was slower to come in from the pasture than ever before. I watched with concern as he carefully made his way across the pasture towards me. I knew in my heart that he was once again in the beginnings of founder. Only this time, I believe his founder was chemically induced by the use of steriods Dexamathazone which he was taking for a severe allergy to flies.

The vet had told me that the drug was rumored to cause laminitis in horses who have foundered previously, but he rushed to assure me that the rumor was heresay and that he had never encountered this problem...

Well guess what? Now, he has. This time, I have brought in sand for Racer to stand on, I am not going to corrective shoes and I will go holistic to try and get this under control. I will still go with my vet and listen to his recommendations, but I am furious with the thought that this drug that was supposed to help him, has turned around and hurt him instead. The vet will be here at 1:00 today to assess Racer so I will keep this updated when I can.
