Stall Confinement PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mary Anne
Frozen ground is taking its toll on Racer's feet. He is on stall confinement

With the temperatures dipping below 10 degrees at night and only getting up to 14 degrees in the daytime, the rocky ground is hard for Racer to navigate. I can't hardly walk on the uneven ground and I don't have founder!

So, I have put both horses in their stall and turnout. Racer is not a happy camper, but this morning as he was making his way to the stall, his legs were trembling and that clinched it for me. I do not want him injured and sick again.  The water is frozen outside so I am carrying water to the horses several times a day from the house. The creek isn't frozen but its a long way there over that frozen rocky terrain I would rather he stayed off of.

Skipping to April 6, 2006- Racer is now ten years old! I look back on the time and wonder where it all went? From the moment he arrived, a gangly colt, with an independent streak and a spirit as wild as the March hares. I look at him now, freely flying across the pasture, no evidence of founder, his ears forward and his tail flying and my heart soars. For a horse that so many gave up and told me that he would never be sound again, well he is doing wonderfully. He is still on a holistic blend that I believe wholeheartedly in. Will he ever be a trail horse? I don't know, I am not going to push him as the trails here are rocky and steep. I just enjoy him, and play with him and will work him when it gets warmer and this damn mud goes away. Happy Birthday to you guy- thanks for your spirit and your courage and showing me your heart each and every day. I am grateful that you have blessed me my life.
