Although there is still rain in the forecast, the horses were badly in need of a bath yesterday.
Surprisingly for a first bath, Racer did not have any leftover winter coat. Usually, I have to scrape it off with a shedding blade. But he was a clean as a whistle. He is still missing a lot of his mane. I have found his mane hair on trees, under the fence posts and in his stall. My theory is, when he begins to get cresty, he itches. So he takes his itch somewhere worthy of scratching.
After his bath he walked over the the walnut tree and found just the right spot to itch his back. I was grateful the branch was so thick, in his enthusiasm he would have broke a smaller one. I did sheath cleaning on both the boys, they go their face washed as well.
Trav doesn't have mud fever this year! This is the first time in 5 years where his feet were in good shape. I don't know if it is because I put GSE on his grain this year as well as in his water bucket. But, I am thrilled he had no sores, blisters of oozing wounds. His skin wasn't even red!
After the bath, they both had a good roll getting completely dirty again.Oh well- next fight to face- the fly fight
