The Battle of the Bugs PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mary Anne
This summer it is supposed to be the hottest of record. With Racer's extreme allergies to fly bites, I am having to step up the game. The flies are horrible this year. Mike and I are even entertaining the thought of getting chickens to help with the bug problem since we cannot use chemicals on the horses. I have gone the non-chemical route, the green route, as it were. But I find that the natural way only works for a few hours. This morning, I put their fly sheets on, put garlic oil on their face and neck and put my anti-itch ointment on Racer's belly as he has a lot of bites there. I am not about to call the vet and have them give him medication that will throw him into laminitis. As it is, I am still working with his bruised heels brought on by the last butthead farrier who trimmed his hooves way back!
